American leading man, all eyes, eyebrows, and a lazy smile. His film career, already a late starter, was seriously disrupted by four-year service in the US Marines. He was an excellent smiling villain, an ability that remained much underused. An avid writer, he published three volumes of poetry and an autobiography. Died from lung cancer.

His Irish-Catholic father, Charles Carey was an investment counselor. His mother was Elizabeth Macdonald Carey, from whence he got his full name: Edward Macdonald Carey.

On Broadway in the hit musical "Lady in the Dark" starring Gertrude Lawrence. Paramount bought the rights to the musical and signed Macdonald to a seven-year contract. When they finally got around to making the movie version, Macdonald was serving WWII duty with the Marines. Ray Milland was cast in his role opposite Ginger Rogers.

One-time Vice President of the Screen Actors Guild.
