One of the great Hollywood wits of the 1920's, 1930's and 1940's, Robert Benchley possessed impeccable comic timing. His appearances as supporting actor in feature films, often in the character of a well-meaning busybody, were almost always occasions to savor. He also instigated and presented a brilliant series of comedy shorts, most of which began "How to...". One of these bumbling diatribes, How to Sleep (1935), won an Oscar.
