MINI BIO:

British actor who played rural figures of authority - alderman, squires, country policemen and the like - and almost made an entire career out of the role of Petty Officer Herbert in several stage productions of Seagulls Over Sorrento. He swapped stockbroking for an acting career at 19 and remained largely a man of the theatre, despite a busy period of film activity in the 1940s. Died from a heart attack.
