Theodore Bikel was a swarthy, heavy-set Austrian born actor and entertainer -- a beefier version of Topol. He fled to Palestine before World War II and moved to England in the post-war years, where he was seen in films, mainly as sweaty, threatening foreigners. Latter in Hollywood he played characters of a more kindly disposition. He also sings, plays guitar and is keenly interested in New York politics. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role as the sheriff in "The Defiant Ones".
