Stocky, buoyant, boyish British actor whose film career divided itself into four phases: as weak and blustering youths (1942-1953); a genial, faintly roguish leading man (1953-1960); a versatile character star (1961-1970); a workmanlike and occasionally inspired director of daunting prestige subjects. Knighted in 1975. Married Sheila Sim (1922-2016) in 1945. Won the best director Oscar in 1983 for Gandhi. A stout campaigner and fighter for the British film industry, he proved its guiding light in the mid-1980s. His on-screen credits were limited to films he directed in the 1980s, but, on turning 70, he returned to acting in crusty character roles. Created Lord Attenborough in 1993.
